Safari Day Trips

We offer tailored, day-riding safaris with several of our specialist horse-riding safari partners and friends who offer high-level riding in the wild with the Big Five.

We love taking you riding in our area! This could be an excursion up Mount Kenya, guided by us, or access or horseback to some of the most beautiful wilderness and wildlife in East Africa, in stunning and globally-recognized conservation areas. We organise this alongside our specialist high-level horse safari partners right here in the famous Laikipia conservancies. These excursions can be arranged in a bespoke manner depending on the time of year, your skill level and your personal requirements. We know this area and our phenomenal safari riding partners, along with their fantastic horses, extremely well, and often collaborate with them on exciting day adventures into the wild, on horseback.

Mount Kenya Horseback Safaris

Once in a lifetime, three-day, two-night adventure.

This expedition begins at the base of the mountain near Timau, and climbs to Rutundu cabins on day one. On day two, we journey higher to Lake Alice, at 12,000 feet, and return to the cabins for the second night. On day three we ride back down the mountain.

  • Equally exhilarating for both riders of horses & cars!
  • Ride a motorbike instead if you can bring one!
  • A family trip to remember!

Day One.

We meet our horses, who have spent the previous night acclimatising at high altitude, at a rendez-vous point north of Timau.

We ride on horseback for five hours (or by car or motorbike for three hours) through the beautiful forest and moorland of the mountains lower slopes. Halfway along this journey, vehicles and horses meet for a welcome picnic.

We continue to climb to 10,000 feet to the Rutundu cabins. These are picturesque log cabins beside Rutundu Lake, in an area of natural beauty. Set off the beaten track, on the northern slopes of the mountain, our overnight stop is famously where Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton.

On arrival at Rutundu, our luggage is ferried across the final gorge. Everything we need for our equine adventure luggage, horse hay, bridles, saddles, rugs, firewood, food supplies is dramatically transported across the gorge in a cage suspended from thick cable.

Horses are stabled directly outside the cabins for the night and their riders are welcome to help prepare them for the cold night ahead. The horses need to wear thick rugs, and are fed plenty of hay and cooked barley for plentiful energy and warmth. The horses themselves seem to love this trip as much as their riders!

That first night up at Rutundu cabins, beside the lake for our first sundowner, is simply magical.

Day Two.

We abandon the vehicles at Rutundu as this is as far as the wheeled transport will reach, and continue on horseback for around one and a half hours to Lake Alice, at 12,500 feet. For walkers this journey takes slightly longer. We have a picnic lunch at Lake Alice, perhaps a cold-water swim or some fishing for rainbow trout, after which we descend back down to the cabins for the second night.

There are alternative walking options at Rutundu itself for those not feeling like the considerable hike to Lake Alice. Smaller children and those not feeling overly active can take a beautiful walk right around lake Rutundu (an easy few hours) and back to the cabin. Equally lovely!

Day Three.

After a hearty breakfast, we all return down the mountain by horse, car or motorbike, gathering again for refreshments in a scenic spot halfway down. We arrive back at the base north of Timau by lunchtime.

More to entice you...

Family Adventure Safari on Mount Kenya

For fishing enthusiasts, temporary fishing licenses can be bought so that you can fish in either lake on this trip. Rutundu lake has a rowing boat that we can use.

Swimming is possible at both lakes...just remember, it's beautiful but cold!

The distance from Nanyuki to the cabins is approximately eighty kilometres. Thirty kilometres of this is on an established but simple track, and a good twenty kilometres of this journey is off-road. The horses travel cross-country up the mountain, crossing gorges as they go. You are at one with nature, following a horse-riding guide who truly knows his mountain.

There is only one very rough track for the vehicles, accessible only to robust four-wheel drives. We always take two vehicles with us on our journey - one is a back-up vehicle for support and to carry all the supplies we need. This is an adventure drive, so its slow and steady! In the rains these roads become virtually impassable, so the cabins close during the rainy season.

We stay two nights at the beautiful eight-berth, solar-powered, self-catering cabins. There are two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and each room has a double bed and two single beds. These are ideal family rooms, but can also be used as two dorms for group trips. The cabins are simple and cosy and the team at the base really know how to ensure you are comfortable. They produce a fantastic, hearty meal with the supplies we bring with us.

With no network reachable from the start of the trip, this is your chance to get truly off grid. After the day's adventures, enjoy the luxury of a cosy night by the fire in the log cabin, with maybe a board game or two, and a drink or two to warm the cockles...
